Food in spain

Cuisine in the Iberian peninsula echoes the cooking of the Middle East (honey and cumin) and that of the Americas (dishes combining meat with chocolate). Yet, essentially, it is family cooking, comparatively simple to prepare and characterized by fresh ingredients. Besides meat, poultry, game, and fish entrees, there are a wealth of dishes featuring beans, rice, eggs, vegetables, and savory pies that make a meal. Tapas - small morsels or appetizers in great variety - play a role in meals throughout the day.

Spain in history

The first Iberian population probably arrived to Spain from the north of Africa. Tartessos, probably an iberian tribe, founded an first kingdom in the valley of Guadalquivir river, in the south of Spain. By 1200 b.C. Celts entered the peninsula, mixing up with Iberians and so generating the celt-iberian race. The origin of the bask people living in the north of the country is uncertain, but many historians suppose that they go back to a pre-iberian population.

Madrid

The capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and 646 meters above sea level, has a population of over three million citisens. A cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Government, Spanish Parliament, Public Administration and the home of the Spanish Royal Family. Madrid also plays a major role in the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the south of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are. Madrid is characterized by vital cultural activity and a very lively nightlife.
